I am a realist painter working in a contemporary style. I believe realism is a form of communication that is universally understood. I was born in Texas and grew up in Oklahoma. Growing up in the wide-open spaces greatly influences my sense of light and air. My work falls into two categories; still life executed from life and larger compositions involving landscapes with people and animals. A painting executed from life is not just a representation of a person or a thing. It is a record of an experience. It can be a record of the time an artist has spent sitting with someone getting to know that person by observing him or her. Or of the time spent observing the way light falls on an object or a landscape and how it affects the colors. The larger compositions are composed from photographs that I take myself. I combine different images to create an arresting dichotomy mostly reflecting on where I grew up. I began painting in my teens taking classes at a local museum school. I also studied at the Art Students League and the New York Academy of Art.
